What is Ear Wax?

Ear wax (also called cerumen) is a natural substance produced by glands in the ear canal. Its purpose is to protect, lubricate, and clean the ears by trapping dust, dirt, and bacteria. Normally, ear wax moves out of the ear naturally, but in some people it can build up and cause problems.

How Ear Wax Builds Up

Ear wax can become hard and impacted when:

  • The natural cleaning process is disrupted
  • Cotton buds or other objects push wax deeper inside
  • The ear canal is narrow or hairy
  • Hearing aids or earplugs are worn regularly

Statistics:

  • Around 2.3 million people each year in the UK require professional ear wax removal.
  • It is one of the most common reasons for primary care consultations relating to ear problems.

Symptoms of Ear Wax Build-Up

  • Reduced hearing or sudden hearing loss
  • Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
  • Earache or a feeling of fullness in the ear
  • Dizziness
  • Coughing (due to nerve stimulation in the ear canal)

Ear Drops and Self-Care Options

Before professional removal, softening the wax can sometimes help.

  • Olive Oil Drops: Gentle and natural, they lubricate and soften wax, making it easier to come out.
  • Sodium Bicarbonate Drops: Effective for breaking down harder wax but can sometimes cause dryness or mild irritation.
  • Hydrogen Peroxide Drops: Help by releasing oxygen, which can bubble and break down wax, though some may find it uncomfortable.

While these drops may help, they are not always effective for significant blockages. In these cases, professional removal is needed.

Our Services at The Hythe Pharmacy

  1. Free Ear Checks – We offer free ear health assessments to check for wax build-up and advise on the best course of action.
  2.  Ear Irrigation (Ear Syringing) – A controlled flow of warm water is used to gently flush out softened wax. This is a safe and effective procedure when performed by trained professionals.
  3. Micro-Suction – Considered the gold standard for ear wax removal. A fine suction device is used to gently remove wax under direct vision, making it safe, precise, and highly effective.
